Call for Researchers and Staff Members

The New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI) is an independent educational and research institution dedicated to advancing the study of complex systems. For more information about us, please see About NECSI.

NECSI is seeking candidates for the following positions:

Positions at the New England Complex Systems Institute are part of a team of first-class researchers and staff who contribute to NECSI research while advancing their personal careers and interests. Positions vary according to academic background, autonomy, on-site or remote location, and focus.

Candidates should be prepared to contribute to NECSI's current research using complex systems to address social and economic challenges, including:

  • Crises in food commodity and financial markets,
  • Conflicts, revolutions, and ethnic violence,
  • International development,
  • Organization of systems for education, military conflict, and healthcare.

Postdoctoral and Student Researcher

Our social systems are going through incredible change. A new era of communication and transportation is enabling collective actions at unprecedented scales. The world is becoming increasingly connected and at the same time more heterogeneous. The challenges are great and the tools we have historically used to think and act within societies are no longer working.

At NECSI we develop scientific frameworks for understanding societies at the global scale. Our research leads to new methods for solving the world's most important and far-reaching challenges. If you would like to be part of creating the tools to quantitively understand the structure and dynamics of socio-economic-technical systems, please be in touch with us. Together we will design new ways to effectively intervene through actions and policies without unintended consequences.

What we offer:

Postdoctoral and predoctoral researchers work closely with NECSI faculty to conduct core NECSI research. These positions provide an opportunity to:

  • gain research experience with expert guidance in many domains;
  • earn authorship credit;
  • participate in seminars, lectures, and conferences;
  • and be part of a stimulating workplace environment of discussion, learning, and debate.

Researchers sometimes but not always join NECSI to lead a specific project. All NECSI researchers are involved in multiple research programs.

Requirements:

  • For student researchers, a post-secondary degree and outstanding academic record in a relevant field.
  • For postdocs, a Ph.D. (or expected Ph.D. by time of employment) and outstanding academic record in a relevant field.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Interest in multi-disciplinary research, especially in domains of current NECSI activity.

Community Outreach Assistant (NGO)

Are you good at relationship building? Interested in helping build relationships among national and global NGOs, government agencies and legislators, health agencies, policy makers and other stakeholders? Join us in solving local, national and global challenges.

The world today is more rapidly changing than ever before, so traditional approaches to understanding how to act that rely on statistics and historical data fall short. Complex systems science comes to fill the gap.

The New England Complex Systems Institute in Cambridge, MA has been instrumental in the development of complex systems science and its applications. Our research advances fundamental science and its applications to real world problems, including social policy matters.

Join the NECSI team as an Outreach Assistant working to develop, coordinate, and facilitate relationships with key players on the national and global stage. The ideal candidate is either an advanced undergraduate, masters or PhD student or recent degree recipient.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Part-time role with opportunity grow into a full time
  • Assist in relationship building and global community outreach
  • Organize and perform research on national and global NGOs, government agencies and legislators, health agencies, policy makers and other stakeholders
  • Engage in social media informational campaigns including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Draft online content and facilitate growth of NECSI in collaboration with but not limited to the President, VP of Outreach, Content Strategy Advisor, and Programs Director
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Can work under pressure of tight deadlines
  • Experience with Government and NGOs across sectors helpful.
  • Experience using CRM tools

Sales and Business Development Representative

NECSI is seeking a development professional to grow our Directed Research business. The successful candidate will have a proven background in identifying, qualifying, and closing consulting and software deals in the Analytics space in the Government and/or Commercial space. Must be well versed in the Data Analytics and/or Business Intelligence domain as a Business Development or Sales professional.

Duties and responsibilities:

The goal for the development is to qualify commercial, non-profit, and public sector prospects using a developed B2B sales process involving field, phone, social marketing and email lead generation tactics.

  • Prospect, educate, qualify, and develop Target Accounts and inbound leads to create sales-ready leads and opportunities
  • Consistently and continuously generate a high volume of prospect engagement activity, primarily over the phone, by following a pre-set playbook.
  • Research contact information for target prospects using Google, LinkedIn, Data.com, Salesforce, and other related software & services.
  • Achieve front-end sales KPI quotas to progress prospects from identification to qualification.
  • Efficiently and gracefully counter top of the funnel objections, prospecting, cold calling, as well as have excellent interpersonal and technical skills.
  • Schedule business appointments on President’s and Executive Director’s calendar after qualifying prospects and logging activities in CRM
  • Maintain specific client information including call records and account status to enhance client approach

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of sales or lead generation experience
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience in Microsoft Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc)

Science Writer

This position is not currently open, but we are accepting applications on a rolling basis for periodic review.

NECSI seeks a science writer able to follow concept-rich scientific material; write clear, concise prose explaining key ideas; edit, revise, and proofread written materials for popular audiences; and compose written content for scholarly papers, the NECSI Web site, and newsletters. The position also involves administrative tasks, correspondence with colleagues and affiliates, and assisting with research projects. This is a full-time position.

Applicants should be reliable, versatile, self-motivated, and willing to challenge themselves. The right candidate will be able to write in a variety of styles and possess strong research abilities. Technical computer skills, especially with Macs, Web site maintenance, and publishing software is desirable. Applicants should have an interest in influencing policy and making a positive social change. A science background is a plus.
